Floor Insulation

Efficiency from the ground up

Substandard insulation levels are prevalent in numerous UK homes, resulting in a significant amount of heat loss through the floor, typically ranging between 10-20% in an average home. This figure can be much higher in older properties with hardwood floors. However, eligible parties can access the latest floor insulation standards under ECO 4.

Heat it up

Floor insulation limits heat loss by adding insulation under or above surfaces, reducing heat escaping into the ground or preventing draughts. Suspended timber floors are insulated by adding a roll beneath floorboards while foam is preferred for solid floors and fixed to the surface.

Installation Process

For Wooden Floors

01

Preparation

Identify the ideal location in the hallway for easy access to the space(s) requiring insulation.

02

Insulation

The insulation rolls are made to the correct size and positioned between the floor joists.

03

Netting

The insulation is held in place by specially designed netting. Hatch: Cut a hatch in the identified location for easy access to the space requiring insulation

04

Ventilation

Retrofit new air bricks to the external walls to ensure the underfloor void has the required airflow and prevent moisture and mould buildup.

For Cellars

01

Preparation

Clear the cellar ceiling and expose the joists to the suspended floor.

02

Insulation

Apply insulation and netting to the exposed joists.

03

Boarding and Sealing

Re-board and seal the cellar

For Solid Floors

01

Preparation

Remove furniture and flooring from the area where the installation will take place.

02

Damp-Proof Membrane (DPM)

Install a damp-proof membrane (DPM) on top of the concrete to prevent moisture and dampness

03

Rigid Foam

Install rigid foam on top of the DPM to cover all areas of the floor and prevent cold spots.

04

Moisture-Resistant Chipboard

Install a moisture-resistant chipboard over the rigid foam to prevent damage to the insulation and enable the occupier to cover the surface with the flooring type they prefer.

05

Skirting Boards

Install new skirting boards to finish the project and raise the floor level.

06

Restoration

Restore the space to its original look, reposition all furniture, and protect all furniture and flooring throughout the installation to prevent any damage.

*Note – The time required for the installation depends on the type of flooring, with suspended floor insulation taking 2-3 hours and solid floor insulation taking around 4 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

The easiest underfloor insulation option is typically blanket or roll insulation. It's flexible and can be easily cut to size, making installation a breeze for improved comfort and energy efficiency.

Floor insulation is highly effective in reducing heat loss and improving energy efficiency. It helps to maintain a comfortable temperature, reduce energy bills, and enhance overall warmth and comfort in your home.

The cheapest way to insulate a concrete floor is by using polystyrene insulation boards. They provide excellent thermal insulation properties, are cost-effective, and can be easily installed on the concrete surface.

When it comes to insulation boards for floors, rigid polyurethane foam boards are often considered the best. They offer high insulation values, excellent load-bearing capacity, and moisture resistance, ensuring long-lasting performance.

Solid floor insulation can be achieved by installing rigid insulation boards directly on top of the solid floor surface. The boards are then covered with a layer of flooring, providing effective thermal insulation and improving energy efficiency in your home.
